statistics help?

1) A random sample of 10 parking meters in a beach community showed the following incomes for a day. Assume the incomes are normally distributed.
$3.60,$4.50,$2.80.$6.30,$2.60,$5.20,$6.75,$4.25,$8.00,
$3.00
Find the 95%confidence interval for the true mean.

2)A local bank needs information concerning the checking account balances of its customers. a random sample of 15 accounts was checked. The mean balance was $686.75 with a standard deviation of $256.20. Find a 98% confidence interval for the true mean. Assume that the account balances are normally distributed.

3) A manufacturer of golf equipment wishes to estimate the number of left handed golfers. How large a sample is needed in order to be 98% confident that the sample proportion will not differ from the true proportion by more than 5%? A previous study indicates that the proportion of left handed golfers is 8%

1) the data set posted only notes six values. I will show the work for these six data points.

Confidence intervals are used to find a region in which we are 100 * ( 1 - ? )% confident the true value of the parameter is in the interval.
In order for the Confidence Interval to be valid you must have data from a normal distribution, at least if you are using the method here. If you do not have normal data then this type of confidence interval is not valid.

To clear up the notation I will use here. "t" is the test statistic and "t_(n-1)" is a Student t random variable with n - 1 degrees of freedom, e.g. a Student t random variable with 18 degrees of freedom is denoted as t_18.For small sample confidence intervals about the mean you have:
xBar ± t * sx / sqrt(n)

where xBar is the sample mean
t is the t - score with n - 1 degrees of freedom such that ?% of the data in the tails, i.e., P( |t_(n-1)| > t) = ? sx is the sample standard deviation
n is the sample size

The sample mean xbar = 4.166667
The sample standard deviation sx = 1.440370
The sample size n = 6

The t score for a 0.95 confidence interval is the t score such that 0.025 is in each tail.
t = 2.570582
The confidence interval is:

( xbar - t * sx / sqrt( n ) , xbar + t * sx / sqrt( n ) )
( 2.655091 , 5.678243 )

2)

The sample mean xbar = 686.75
The sample standard deviation sx = 256.2
The sample size n = 15

The t score for a 0.98 confidence interval is the t score such that 0.01 is in each tail.
t = 2.624494
The confidence interval is:

( xbar - t * sx / sqrt( n ) , xbar + t * sx / sqrt( n ) )
( 513.1383 , 860.3617 )

3)

For large sample confidence intervals about the population proportion you have:

pHat ± z * sqrt(phat * (1- phat) / n)

where phat is the sample proportion
z is the zscore for having ?% of the data in the tails, i.e., P( |Z| > z) = ?
n is the sample size

To find the sample size needed for a confidence interval of a given size we need only to concern ourselves with the error term and the width of the interval.
We know that the interval is centered at phat so we need to find the value of n such that

z * sqrt(phat * (1-phat) / n) = width.

The z-score for a 0.98 confidence interval is the value of z such that 0.01 is in each tail of the distribution.
z= 2.326348

The equation we need to solve is: z * sqrt(phat * (1-phat) / n) = width

n = phat * (1 - phat) * (width / z) ^ -2.

If we don't know anything about phat and are still asked to find the sample size we let phat = 0.5. This maximizes the value of the error term and if n is sufficient for phat = 0.5, the n will be sufficient for all other values of phat.

n = 0.08 * ( 1 - 0.08 ) * ( 0.05 / 2.326348 ) ^ -2

n = 159.3262

n must be integer valued. Always take the ceiling of n so that the size of the interval will be correct.

n = 160

This is a left handed set btw.

not really. the driver looks pretty nice so you can try to sell that. but i would try to sell the rest of the irons and golf balls at a garage sale or something. :)

left handed?

Posted by admin

If you were left-handed (Or if you are), do you think you would feel oppressed by the right hand dominated world?

Personally, being a southpaw myself, I have faced many issues with the world. In 2nd and 3rd grade, I was force to write with my right hand, and forced to rewrite most of my work because of sloppinesbas. (luckily, the teacher was fired for beating a kid with a yardstick instead of sending them to the principal.)

In 7th grade PE, when golf was the subject, I was forced to walk laps instead because the school couldn't afford the proper equipment. Baseball is also a sport problem because a hit would always send the ball strait to first base.

Writing is a problem because our hand blocks what we wright and smears the ink. And when holding a pencil, the writing on the side is upside down for us. (maybe my OCD is acting up, but it sucks!)

Then there is the scissor problem. Hold any pair of scissors in the left hand, and the plastic digs into your flesh...

I'm a left-handed writer. I take pride in the uniqueness of my hand domination. However, when it comes to all other activies, I work with my right hand. I bowl, throw a ball, use scissors. Now being a teacher, my palm is always green (from overhead markers.) but oh well....

It sounds like you have a lot of negativity with your "southpaw" status...but take pride in knowing that statistically, southpaws make more money than their right handed counterparts ;o)

Are you serious? There's a left handed screwdriver???

~Astonished ~Cindy! :O
..

My right foot. Don't we all?

my boss need 1i have looked everywhere but i just get strange looks

It's the same shop that sells sky hooks.

when i use my driver or any of my irons, i have a terrible slice left and i dont know how to fix it.. I am left handed and my clubs are a little to short. am I slicing left because the clubs are to short?

well if your slicing the ball left it could be the clubs but heres a couple other things it could be

1- watch your stance make sure your no angling left
2- when you swing make sure to keep your front foot still (you can pivit the back but dont move it)
3-swing straight through the ball it may sound weird but my friend was swinging and moving his club while he swung
4-make sure your the right distance from the ball if your too far you may be hitting the side of the ball

i am left handed and always hit slices (left) and was thing that the slogan for r7 is say goodbye to the right side of the golf course" but i dont want that is that slogan for just right handed golfers or does this club just always go left no matter what hand u are? will it help me fix my slice?

I never liked the idea that the club-makers produced clubs to make the ball draw. It MIGHT help eliminate your slice, BUT I'd say work on the swing to eliminate the slice instead of buying a club set that will make the ball draw. Try coming out with a more shallow take away and set up the ball more towards the back of your stance. Also a lot of the time people slice is b/c they setup away from their target line. if you're setup too open, you'll be forced to come across your body and promote a slice. You can also try a stronger grip (turning your left hand in this case more over the top to make sure the "v" your thumb and index finger makes points upwards parallel with the V your right hand makes. But to answer the question, the draw clubs MIGHT work. I spoke to 1 of my friends that work at a manufacturer and he claims they only help so much. If it's a CRAZY slice, then it won't really do anything. It's more in the swing.

My nephew is staying with me this week. He's never played golf before. Since I play a little, I thought it would be fun to teach him but I've never taught anyone before. Plus, I want him to have some boy fun while he's staying with me, his aunt.

I bought him 3 clubs to get started; a 7 iron, a driver and a putter. They are all for left handed boys aged 8-11.

First off, I would reccomend getting the book:
"On the Other Hand" by Steven Anderson--the only Left-handed PGA instructor. I am left-handed, and his book has helped me tremendously. http://www.amazon.com/Other-Hand-Steve-Anderson/dp/0965079147/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-8022990-5932925?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185390082&sr=1-1

The reason it has helped me is because his theories and concepts come across very easy to understand--so easy, that I have found myself giving pointers/advice from his book when people ask me. Not to mention there are LOTS of pictures--which for me, were easy to relate to. Believe it or not, it's actually somewhat difficult to "reverse" every image (or any written advice, i.e. 'turn your right shoulder...') in your brain from RH to LH, especially if you are a kid.

When I was younger, I didn't even know what Golf really was. I was busy playing Baseball, Football, and Basketball (which I played in HS). However, in hindsight, I would have not played football to play Golf in a heartbeat. Golf is something you carry for life--like your will to live.

Those 3 clubs will be perfect for him to start with--but most importantly, have him focus on the 7-iron for now. The driver can be discouraging, and the putter he will do well with (almost all kids putt fairly well it seems) in practice over the years.

Really get after him to "watch the ball hit the club". In my experience, teaching/coaching kids they tend to want to "see" where it goes more than they actually want to hit it. Have him focus on keeping his head still through the swing, and watch the ball fly off the club.

Good luck--and have fun!!
